In the late summer my brother and brother in law helped me build a studio in the woods. A lot of the materials used are recycled and reused. They are in construction so they could help with that a lot. It makes it a little more earth friendly. It will be easier to work on arts and crafts and projects before heading out to trips now. There is a sleeping loft above, it's on 4 blocks with no foundation, 2 desks and room to read and chill all for the fraction of the price one would pay for such a structure.

If you don't know whats wrong with society and your life or if you don't even know there is something wrong, reading anything by Daniel Quinn is a good start.
Go out and get one of his books. Read it from cover to cover. Just starting it and putting it on a shelf is not being literate. Neither is just being able to read a menu. You need to be able to read whole books, and the right ones. Not just fluff.
No go out and prove to yourself that your not another shallow vacuous moron and read and enjoy it.

It's amazing here. Everything is comfortable. Soft ground, warm water, warm temperature, I sleep and eat and hike and draw at the beach all day and night. There are natural virgin beaches. I eat fresh fruit, fish, and veggies. Life is soooo beautiful here. Here is a photo of me spinning fire.

Be Here Now.
This is Baba Ram Dass. He was Dr. Richard Alpert. He's the other guy who got fired from Harvard with Timothy Leary. He went to India after that and tripped with monks, gurus, and holy men and got famous when he wrote "Be Here Now". It's really good and strange story with lots of drawings in it. So check it out.

Geronimo when he's old.
That's what this drawing is suppose to be. So I will spend the winter traveling and hanging out with the first americans. Adventure and lessons from shamen in the rainforest and the dessert, and more adventure in mountains and beaches. I'm excited for what mysteries I may find out and for more experiments and freedom.

I've been liking to draw native americans lately. I will do more and better ones. They have so cool faces to draw. I like Sitting Bulls face a lot. He was one of the few to win a war with the whites. Then he went east and saw how many cracker ass whities there were in the big cities there and realized he wouldn't win another war with them. Then he started making peace treaties. I think you can see the fierceness in his face. A tough dude but a defeated one. Its a strong and disturbing look that stirs you deep to see it. Look forward to seeing that same look on the face of environmentalists if the world can't come to some serious decision on Oct. 24 in Copenhagen.

after leaving the beach I had a great trip back to VA with my very good friend Kaity. We stopped in New Orleans and the Smokies among many other places on the way.

I draw pictures of KD alot. Sometimes shes not so happy about it but still poses like in this drawing. Usually she is happy and doesn't mind. I'm having a good time here. I'm drawing live caricature and pastel portrait. I will try to post something soon of that.

Some ideas I have about living that are inspired by Wavy Gravy, hippies, native americans, Derrick Jensen, and oh...uuuuh everybody that ever lived in the time before or outside of civilization, which is to say most people who have ever lived and the majority of time that our species has been on the earth. To specify for now, i want to talk about rent.
Your born here. You didn't choose to be here. You can't go anywhere else. But you have to pay to stay. You have to pay to exist. What pervert ever thought of this arrangement. ..And landlords. How outdated does this sound? "Hark! I be the LOrd of the Land! Be ye friend or foe!!!" There's even landladies. Lords and Ladies. Your a landserf.
So I'm deciding to do some time liberating this privatized planet and make some public space where there is none. I have found plenty of beautiful natural areas to park my rig for the night (with lots of help from the local youth who also look for places to be free).

The next Adventure!!!
here I posted to pics that I think are nice goodbye pics. There are so many ideas for this next adventure, I know where I'm going next but the rest I will let pan out as the trip goes, oh course. Amongst the exciting ideas and things that may happen are, adventures to save the planet and and oceans before its to late, going to talk to the wise natives of this land, maybe just a trip to concentrate on the art and get more funds, the continent down under, or pyramids in the americas, and many many more ideas. ...what will happen for sure is a trip of wild abandon and going off the map. Here's my wall at the NCN convention. Ooooooh, man, I have a lot to learn. I was feeling like a baby drawing next to masters. It's ok. All part of the path. I learned a lot and there are lots of different directions that I want to try now. I found out how much art can just really be whatever you want! Who knew?! So this wall is pretty much stuff just like my park sketches. Hopefully I will be learning and doing more and better work here soon. I will try to break out of my bounderies... in life and in drawing.
I drew this here dude with the glasses. I was pretty proud of it. Starting to feel a little more brave with the stretching it all out. There is still a lot of things that I would change, do different, do better and all that crap, but this is a step in a better direction. Thanks to everyone at the NCN!!!

ഹിയര് ഇറ്റ്സ് I'm getting my old hippy van up and running again and I finally bought a solar panel for it. I have always wanted one. As you can see by the light on the panel, it is working and collecting a charge even on a rainy day with no sun. And I found these feathers from a hawk and a big forclosed house to squat while walking in the woods. Missouri is full of treasures!

here is another one of dave...hahaha. sometimes he says he likes them, sometimes he says he doesn't. He stares at them a lot when he works there. I put this one in a demo frame and then when he was working at that stand and I wasn't, he took it back out of the frame. It feels good that they definitly strike a cord with him. That must mean he can see it to. I made it raining candy corn, because I think candy corn is such a wierd invention and it just seems like what might fall from the sky in davids world...plus its halloween time.

This is from a Derrick Jensen book also, but you can do a search for more information on these and other fascinating experiments that can only change every hypothesis of what westerners consider to be alive and conscious. In light of what he has proven here, it's not much of a stretch to imagine the Giai hypothesis that the entire earth is alive with consciousness. Some native tribes have reported that they see everything as alive, the rocks the rivers and trees, and that the white man sees everything as dead and there for the taking , the rocks the rivers and the trees and sometimes the white man doesn't even see some other people as alive. Since that test Mr. Backster has done many many tests with plants and had amazing discoveries. They are experiments that you can even recreate yourself and you can find out why sciences narrow rigidity won't allow the tests to be accepted.

That was from "A Language Older Then Words" by Derrick Jensen and I completely agree with this guy and what he has to say. We should all feel pretty silly for all the times we have passed on these things and on real life or love for more school or work or more money. Silly is to nice of a word for how we should feel about selling our lives and our friendships.

Anyway, I miss everybody out there and all the friends along the way. I hope to see you all again.

I told these guys I would put them on. there was another but i lost the photo. such a fun group, they said the were watching me all week and wanted one from me. wow! great for my ego.

I just wanted to post this. It's not some great work of art because it was so quick and busy and I was nervous for the guy. I just wanted to post it to share the experience. This guy had me draw him proposing in the caricature. He came up to me and asked me secretly to draw it. She had no idea. As I drew a large crowd started to gather. By the end of the drawing I was so nervous and it wasn't even me poping the question. Then I showed it and he got on his knee and pulled out the ring. She said yes and everyone was cheering and clapping. It was the most romantic thing I could ever imagine. Best wishes to this sweet happy couple.

Why I love my job

So I get this guy to sit down for a demo. He's not interested in getting a caricature at this point. We talk about the usual stuff, where he's from, cartoons, the number of moons around Jupiter etc... and then I give him a little peek of the drawing.
And then I give him another peek.

He ended up buying it with a frame. Good times. So there is a little taste of my job. ....now all I have to do is figure out how to make some money. ..haha

This guy was great. He didn't really know if he wanted a caricature, but I knew he would love it so I roped him into my chair. It was a quick one because it was a busy day. In this first picture he hasn't seen the drawing yet and is just sitting there wondering what he is doing in my chair and not on a roller coaser. ....and then i show it to him..

He likes it.

And here's some other people. This is how most of my days go. I just wanted you to see so you could understand more of why I love this so much. Does any studio artist get this kind of feedback? This might be the most one can do to make the world a little better for now. ...this and destroy your car. ....and destroy car culture for that matter. ...or the modern military/industrial complex.. ..oh I digress. This dude was really fun to draw. Sometimes its so forced. this was natural. there is an attitude I have been seeing where some of the artists don't think the people like goofy faces of themselves. Theese 2 loved it.
This guy here below is one of the great first year artists and a great all around artist. Look out for him, he's loaded with talent.
Who's this hot young number? Awwuu yeea. I'm made her stupid looking, thats ok, she's got it coming to her. :)
This guy is in art school or something like that and wants to be a caricature artist. I gave him Kamans number and told him about how great it is. We had a good time talking, he knew who Court Jones is and a lot of artists that I think are heros.

I think this kind of crap is funny. I need a business card because sometimes people ask me for one when they hear I do caricatures or when I'm drawing a caricature of them. People also often hand me there business card. What the hell am I ganna do with it? .. Ha ha! Here is a great way for me to have a business card and recycle other peoples cards. This is great. It really gives me a laugh making them. There is even a blank place at the bottom for my phone number because I'm always going around still. This is only the first one I made so it has some mistakes on it. I plan on making a few other stampers to and I now that I know how to do it better, I won't mess it up and the next will be even more beautiful. I feel positive about the future. This is a legend in the making.

Fashion

Here's some thoughts on fashion I got after reading some of "The Philosophy of Fashion" by Lars Svenson. (I hope I got his name right) I didn't finish the book. It's in Norway. I will try to come across it again. I was inspired to read it from a conversation had where one of my friends was defending the idea that it is ok to by a 1000 dollar purse. I don't think it is.

"There is a natural inclination of man to compare his behavior to that of a more important person. (a child compares itself to grown ups, or you to your favorite author, rockstar, celeb, etc.) in order to imitate that other persons ways." -Kant-

When the only reason for it is to not appear less important, then it is fashion that I don't like. Like a lower class person trying to look like they are a higher class.

There are 2 opperative principles here 1. Differentiation from others in your class (which I think is not so bad and can be individual expression/can be art) and 2. Imitation of the class above. (this I don't like at all. It's where the purchasing of symbols comes into play, and the concept of conspicuous waste or conspicuous consumption.) Any person engaged in this is a materialist and I find that so boring.

This person will confuse economic and aesthetic worth.

It's the need to conform vs. the need to express individuality.

Here's a picture I made for Matz before I left. I didn't put everybody in there. So whoever isn't in the picture it is either because I didn't draw you earlier or didn't have room or time to draw you in. I think of this one as a prototype and I will do a much better one later and present it to Matz.

I'm thinking about everybody there and I miss Norway and everybody there a lot. In Drobak and in Norway there are some of the best people I have ever met. Great hospitality, great friends. I look forward to when I can visit again. Thanks for everything.

t.v. stinks, meaning in life, and back in the new world

I was just sitting here reading an article in "Everything you know is wrong" (go get it and read it now and then make some appropriate life style changes, please)> The article was "Toxic TV syndrome". Here's an excerpt.

"If you reduced all of history"s best advice on living well to two fridge-magnet-worthy goals, they would probably be 1) pursue excellence or 2) pursue balance. In other words, either drill down - work with obsessive focus in one area, try to create something new and valuable and lasting; or go wide - learn to surf of meditate, read good books, tend a garden, raise a kid or two, try to be neighborly. You know, all the stuff that makes life worth the price if you job itself isn't all that fulfilling."

Pretty good stuff, and it says a lot more about t.v. and culture and its bad effects and the epidemic of depression in our culture and the possibility of our entire culture being just toxic.

Any way, I'm back here in the U.S. to focus in one area. I'm drawing 8 hours a day at work and then I come home and draw. What I was doing before was going wide. Now I do feel very passionately about drawing, its one of the few things that can keep me settled down and have me look past allot of things that are against my ideals. . ie. submitting to corporate ideals of dress that are in place to rid one of identity, take a drug test that is an illegal search and a direct violation of the 4th amendment, live in the u.s. again where people and communities are isolated from each other and cars are necessary to get around, I will also be paying taxes to a system that i disagree with, that threatens life on the planet with the largest nuclear arsenal in the world, and i will even have a bank account where rich people can use my money to get richer.

I mention this because when I was back in Missouri last summer I had a conversation with a friend who thought that I had no purpose in life and that it was a bit depressing, thus once again proving that often the people that you think are weird are thinking the exact same thing about you. I was not able to find any sense of purpose in people working at jobs that one cannot possibly have any passion for and that support unnecessary invented goals, while amassing more stuff and popping out babies. It seemed so much like everyone was just doing what came next because that's what your suppose to do. I cant understand there choices of how to live there one and only life. I also can't understand how they don't see a sense of purpose in my life. For me there is a natural connection between the traveling, activism, visiting and participating in social experiments in living and sustainability, and art, that they can't see. Maybe the first paragraph clarified a little. I will explain more later.

oh, well, I'm back in the New World.. and for real this time. I actually live minuets away from Jamestown and Williamsburg. I'm drawing the tourists and trying to save money for art school...and if that doesn't work, action and adventure. And I'm happy to say that the price in gas increase has caused lifestyle changes. There is talk of a 4 day work week, the people I live with have moved much closer to the work, and they want to get mopeds. This is all using less. It's still america and very wasteful and using way to much energy, but there is some improvements. I'm very optimistic for the future and the change coming to this country, it is a little to slow for my lifestyle choices but it will come for the masses sometime soon.

I just wanted to say that i was crabby the day i wrote that big load of crap about Florida later int this blog. Not that there isn't some truth in it but really i had a great time over all. In fact, i miss it and i learned a lot and met some great people. sometimes i think i need that kind of environment with lots of people and the drawing and entertaining others to be content. I'm ganna try to get into a park again to draw for sure. hopefully sooner then later i will be drawing tons of people all the time.
oh. i also didn't mention that its just bizarre how many religious people there are back in the u.s. I swear, its like going back to medieval Europe or something. But for all its problems , i miss and love it back in America. ...i just hope they don't burn me for being a heathen.

I think these ones are kind of cool. I can tell I got alot from the guys in florida. If you wanna see the best thing ever go and search Sean Gardners blog. Wow. that dude can draw.
Both of these ladies wanted to be drawn with a glass of wine. I put a dead fish in the second drawing when she told me that she wanted the same thing.
Damn, this one came out sideways and I'm sure the world wasn't faceing that direction when I drew it. I like this one of the guy.

Ok, i just got back from Berlin and I'm trying to add these images and its slow and not working and adding the wrong ones, so here is a drawing of Turid and its kind of cool but also kind of to much formula and typical but i like it anyway so piss off. She's suppose to be turning into architecture because she's and architect, and those are doozers.

this guy told me he was a cook when i was almost done with the picture, so i stuck him in an apron and gave him a weenie on a fork. He loved it and hes an art collector. He has a Dali and one by Hundertwaser. I hope he doesn't hang it next to those guys. Im not that good yet.

alright. Im ganna try to put some drawings and stuff on this blog. it was suppose to be a travel blog but i never did much with it. i like writing in my journal and stuff..sooo, im ganna put theese drawings on here and i can direct people here to look at it and maybe i will get some work or something.

any way, check it out. here is a did a bunch of drawings for this business and they photo copied them and put them on there office wall and took the originals home. it was fun and great practice and some well needed samolies for my pocket.

back in the U.S.

i think its been years since i posted last. well I'm back in the u.s. and I'm leaving again soon and i wanna vent it out a little.
in this city in the south. I'm out of the wintertime. its warm. i have an art job. these are the good things.
sooo..streets lined with open air cafes..? nope, this would be the perfect place for it with the weather, but they haven't made that here. and who would really want to sit out near the street with all these cars going. ...bike lanes? wrong again. I'm almost the only one in the city who uses the sidewalk. i can go for miles on my skateboard and maybe i only pass 1 or 2 people. ..they look crazy, or homeless. ..does it say weird things about me to? and the roads are packed with cars. There is no city train or street cars and the buses stop running early. How is my attempt at making less pollution and liberation from automobiles viewed? I was told that I'm irresponsible for not having a car.
At work people care very much about money. Obviously. The same songs are played over and over. I will shutter for years at the mention of any of these Christmas songs i hear everyday. Even my coworkers recognize that its damaging our Psyche.
I will just say about my job that I very much enjoy the work, it is making visual art, and its at a place where everybody is suppose to make people happy on there vacations so they can get back to there jobs and there lives. ..ok, i guess i ended up telling everything almost.
then back to home after work where the people incessantly zone out to movies and video games to supplement experience to there fragmented and half-lived lives. they are at the movies now while i borrow one of there computers.
the people are always thinking "get for me, get for me". They aren't interested in understanding what is going on in the world. They don't want to hear about it. I'm sure that very few understand how close we are now to having a nuclear weapons accident, or how we will know with in 10 years if there will still be humans on this earth in 100 years or not. They don't know and they don't want to know. They will keep going to work everyday, getting for themselves, hearing the same mind numbing songs over and over, driving isolated home with there own songs playing, and into the house huddled around the T.V. with aliens fighting on it or vampires or some other boring fantasies. If you try to tell them about it they will resist it. If you are going to have any conversation about it then you are just being a bummer to them.
I remember when I was doing some peace work years ago we talked about how there is a psychological way to make war impossible and we all know that they use clever psychology in making people into warriors, but I think there is also a psychological way to make subversion impossible, and i think they have figured it out. Its working.
They could have created a paradise here, but instead it more resembles Mordor. Actually it reminds me a lot of Bangkok. Oh, and if you decide to have a philosophical conversation you might be equally let down. They will say "not now" but they will mean "not ever". This place where I'm working...it reminds me of the sultans palace in Turkey or the Forbidden city in Beijing. It is walled in and paradise on the inside. Beautiful tropical plants and animals. And outside the walls are the noise and traffic of everyday life.
ooooh, they're home. I gatta get off this computer now. More to come soon.

San Pedro

I haven't been typing much. I was in Ecuador. Living on bannanas at the beach. But i'm back now in the siera of Peru. it's cheep here and i will type more and try to bring this web page up to date. I've now been in South America for 5 full moons, but here's a story from my first full moon of the trip. It happened right around here where i am now. This area is where the first Incas came from, where the oldest constantly inhabited city in the americas is, the people say this area is the umbibical of the world. I don't know, but there is a very special energy here. Never planing or intending to come here, i keep coming back.

ChewbySelva cooked the San Pedro for hours over the fire in the open court yard of the house where we were staying. It was a 1 room house with no bathroom, kitchen, or running water but with an excellent enclosed court yard for camping and fiestas. That night was Luna LLena (full moon). Every full moon is celebrated and remembered with theese friends. And in preperation for the purification of the SanPedro, nobody ate meat for these days. ChewbySelva is from the selva (rainforest) and has traveled extensively and shared much of his knowledge with me. I find him to be a bit easier to understand than most people. He knows how to talk to gringos. He made the batch a little mild because it was my first time. He's nice like that. It was difficult to leave this night with the guys, because the most beautiful of the Incas showed up and wanted to party with me. Locumbia yelled for me not to go.... I enjoyed the cab ride out of town. I haven't been in one of these goofy tiny racecar looking things much on this trip. We had just enough money for the cab and bread. We always have just enough money. We hiked down dry river beds into the night and each of us drank one glass of SanPedro under the light of the moon. When we arrived at our site for the night, next to a waterfall spring, we fell straight asleep to the music of the water, we were exausted and cold.
In the morning we all drank more, each saying nice things and drinking to our good trip. filling our bottles at the spring we hiked out of the lush green valley (snacking on all the vegtables that grow along the way) to the dessert mountains. In the dessert we took the sweet fruit of the SanCayo cactus to chase the bad taste of the SanPedro. I drank to "no mas guerras, no mas fronteras" (no more wars, no more borders) .
The sound of ChewbySelvas flute and the sound of Rastamans digeredoo echooed through the vallies and we looked for pretty rocks on our hike. Me and Rastamon hiked back down to the spring to get water for the others at the top. On our way down we found cactus cigaretts and smoked them. I learned more spanish and he english in a language trade. In the valley again i saw the irrigation system at work. a system that hasn't changed since before the Incas. In the field i had a talk with a funny old lady working her field. the rest of the day was spent in the sun and despite the language barrier, whenever i saw my friends i had to smile or laugh...
.... ..that night getting into town..it was strange seeing the bars and all the cars and crazy people of Babylon. I didn't want to party with those people. We went home.
My friends asked to look into my eyes. They starred for awhile and the said i had been effectively purified by the San Pedro cactus.

first part of the trip

It's more than 2 months into this trip so i'm ganna try to catch you up with the story here. I'm typeing this from Huancayo. It's a town in the sierra in the middle of Peru. I've been here for the past few days. I stay in a tiny room with 2 other great friends. There's really no water in the hostal and i sleep on the floor, but i draw and study spanish and make jewelery and spin fire and practice juggleing and make other art everyday. We trade earings for food and other things we need. I'm ganna have to leave them soon and cruize for the boarder as fast as i can, and by myself, because my visa is running out. I'm liveing my dream and i hope everyone else is to. ok, to start the story. I guess i'll type a few things from my journal (which has drawings and is alot cooler than this stupid bloggy bloggerson crap).

Waking up on a dessert hillside, a bit lost, with very little water, no money, and sick is the low point of this trip. And walking out of a town the size of Airequipa with all my gear is no small task. How does one get into a situation like this? you may ask yourself. And I'm realy not sure even when it's happening. The answer to that is probly somewhere in the question of "How long does it take to have bank problems and unusualy strange craps after just entering SouthAmerica?" ...for me, 3 days.

But it was nice. and adventure ya know. Hiking out of Airequipa, i was given a couple of funny looks, but it was a place where many a yankie had trod before (yankie as in the sandle not the northerners). Unlike my hike frim the Miami bus station to the airport. I was wondering why no one else hiked from the bus station to the airport. Taxis are overpriced and make smoke and in the first couple of blocks i already found some wire (good for making poi wicks) and a roll of electric tape (good for making many things like juggleing clubs and devil sticks and other stuff. not to mention you can tape with it). I climbed from a highway to the overpass bridge that had the road into the airport. On this road there were no sidewalks the whole way. Ok, maybe this is why the people don't walk it. it's not realy encouraged. As the cars wizzed past i was reminded of how in "Ferighenhight 451" the father from the family of real people was arrested several times for being a pedestrian.

After the long and strenious hike out of Airequipa (passing through many nice and scary neighborhoods) my reward was a beautiful sunset and view of the 4 volcanos that surround the city. At night the city lights are shimmering nicely and the whole town has the sound of barking. Sounds as if its inhabited souly by dogs. ..Looking at cities at night back home, i often think of the beautiful silence there will be when the system falls. But if the revolution happened tommorrow, Airequipa wouldn't sound any different. It would bark all night.

I found my way back to town the next day, not sure what i was going to do, and at this point not even sure what the hell i was doing here. ..but by nightfall i was drinking wine, eating, and staying at a friends house. It's been over a week now and i still don't have any money, and i don't care. I spend my days practiceing spanish, juggling , poi, staff, raul, andjewelry making. Yesterday i went to the country and cut a stump to make my drum. We also cut for 3 digeridoos and 4 other drums. I almost have enough jewelery to start selling. In one week me and my group will have enough money to go to Cuzco (the capital of the Incas and the oldest constantly inhabited city in the americas) from ther to the rainforest. I'm happy. You truely get what you give and as Ishmael suggests, i'm living by the hand of god.

Well, maybe not exactly as Ishmael suggests, but there will be more experiments with that later. And I'll try to type more when i get a chance. That's all ya get for now. love you and
